Throughout this class, we will continue our investigation into the question, "What does it mean to be human?"
After all, we are the ones who practice free will and come to understand why!
Janet Clement sent me this Huffington Post article by Johann Hari on The Real Cause of Addiction. It presents powerful scenarios supporting the Bruce Lipton's cell biology approach at the human level. That is, "It's the environment, stupid!" In case you have any difficulty with the link, I have copied it to a PDF with my highlights here.
I have put the DVD "The Human Spark" on reserve at Lilly Library. This is a PBS series hosted by Alan Alda. Some episodes may be available on the web via this link.
The episode on mirror neurons is available by clicking here. It is only on the web.
As we think more about what it means to be human, the role of connections, empathy, imagination and the environment, let me introduce the research of Dr. Barbara Fredrickson, a psychologist at UNC Chapel Hill. She has studied the bio-chemical side of positive human emotions and come up with what she calls "an upgraded version of love, Love 2.0." This upgraded version is not a "category of relationship." She emphasizes that the human body is a verb, not a noun. Fredrickson says, "Love is connection." She goes on to say, "Love is a product of human evolution. In this very literal way, you were made for love."
Here is a link to the OLLI class on her book I taught last spring.
Below are the photos of last week's class.
